Ralph Ellison's " King with the Bingo Game" starts by laying out a man who will be sitting in a show theatre watching a movie. This story is all about how a young black man has come from North Carolina to a northern town and struggles to find a work because he would not have his birth license. This youthful black gentleman is wanting that one working day he is victorious enough cash from the bingo game to purchase a doctor to save lots of his partner, Laura. Ellison uses literary devices just like theme (North& South, Fate), symbolism (peanuts and wine), and irony to further develop the storyline.

At the start of the story, the peanuts and wine symbolize the past. " The woman looking at him was eating roasting peanuts that smelled so excellent that this individual could hardly contain his hunger". (Ellison p. 443) The man is actually hungry and he can smell the nuts that the woman sitting in front of him is ingesting. Peanuts stand for the past since in the southern the man could ask women for a almond and he would be given a single. " There, on his right, two guys were having wine out of a container wrapped within a paper carrier, and this individual could listen to soft gurgling in the dark" (Ellison s. 444) The men sitting following to him are drinking wine and all they can think about can be how famished he is and exactly how he would like he was consuming peanuts or drinking wine beverages. As much as he desires that, he cannot get it because he has no cash and his partner is unwell. Ellison uses the wine and the peanuts to symbolize how this individual misses yesteryear and what his current situation can be. The nuts and the wine are mentioned in the history to illustrate the differences involving the North as well as the South. Ellison uses this as the opening showing the readers where he is located and how desperate his situation is in that instant.
